Content Description

Consists of letters written by Aubrey Commons to his parents while he was serving in the United States Air Force during World War II (1941-1946); photographs of Commons and his family, including images related to Commons' military service during World War II and his education at San Jose State University after the war (circa 1934-1965); color slides of Grass Valley, California, and of Aubrey Commons' father in the Grass Valley mines (circa 1920s); ephemera; and a Cornish cookbook (2007).

Biographical Note

Aubrey Marshall Commons was born in 1917 to Marshall and Beatrice Commons. The Commons family moved to Grass Valley, California, in 1922, where Marshall Commons worked as a miner. The family was of Cornish heritage. Aubrey Commons served in the United States Air Force as an officer during World War II, and was stationed in England. After the war, he studied education at San Jose State University on the G.I. Bill, and worked as a high school teacher in Sacramento, California.
