Biographical Note

The estate of Stowe in Buckinghamshire was purchased in 1590 by Peter Temple, and remained in possession of the Temple family and, subsequently, the Grenville family until 1921 when the estate, house and its contents were sold by Lady Mary Morgan Grenville, Baroness Kinloss of Stowe. In 1886 the house and estate were rented to Louis-Philippe-Albert d’ Orléans, comte de Paris (1838-1894), who wasa claimant to the French throne from 1848 until his death at Stowe House in 1894. John Land (1852-1928) was employed by the comte as the gamekeeper on the Stowe estate. Land was born in Rushford (Norfolk), the son and grandson of gamekeepers; he and his wife Hannah had at least three sons, one of whom was Harry Frederick Land. John Land worked on various great estates including Stowe and Wrest Park, Bedfordshire; he died at Silsoe, Bedfordshire in 1928.
