General Physical Description note: 1 velvet covered photograph album with broken metal clasp. 17 pages with 49 photos inserted. Three photos are either tintypes or daguerrotypes but have not yet been identified as such.

Biographical/Historical note

William Freeman Myrick Goss (born c. 1828 in Massachusetts) came to Santa Barbara as early as 1866, according to voter registration records. (He is not to be confused with his nephew of the same name, born in 1857 who became Dean of Engineering at Purdue University.) He married Etta May Marcy (b. 1862), daughter of Hannah Chapman Marcy (b. 1834) and William C. Marcy (b. 1822). The Marcys lived in Washington state before moving to Santa Barbara, which may have been as early as 1875. Their descendants and other relatives continued to live in Santa Barbara until their deaths.

Scope and Contents note

This album contains photographs from the late 1800s of the families of William Freeman Myrick Goss and Hannah Elizabeth Chapman Marcy. The earliest photograph is dated 1872, but several tintypes or daguerrotypes may have been taken earlier. Last names of people included in the album are (in order of appearance): Gaston, Marcy, Atkinson, Burgess, Ingham, Sawyer, Clink, Chapman, Goss, Barlow, Cooper, Scudder, Clark, Pratt, and Atkins.
