Immediate Source of Acquisition
Gift of Estate of Mary Beatrice Fox via Mrs. Cecily Sargent, August 1977 and March 1980.
Mary Beatrice Fox (1876-1976) was the daughter of Sarah Mary Baker Fox and Charles James Fox (1835-1922), son of photographer
Charles James Fox (1812-1872). She attended the University of California and was a friend of the future architect, Julia Morgan.
Her father, Charles James Fox was an early landowner in Pasadena, California, having purchased part of the Sphinx Ranch from
William Allen, part of Kinneloa Mesa from Abbot Kinney, and land from homesteader Carlos Cruz. The Fox family home was built
on the edge of Eaton Canyon, and in later years the property was subdivided, and Mary Beatrice Fox sold land to Los Angeles
County for Eaton Canyon Park.
The Mary Beatrice Fox papers consist of maps, land papers, diaries, correspondence, and documents related to the Fox family
and the greater Pasadena, California area from 1789 to 1961. Of note in the collection are the diaries of Mary Beatrice Fox,
from 1889 to 1909, and those of her mother, Sarah Mary Baker Fox, from 1889 to 1899. These diaries illustrate life in the
Los Angeles and Pasadena areas during this period. The collection also contains two letters from Julia Morgan, which were
written from Paris, 1896 and 1898, and one 1862 letter from C. Meinerth to Charles James Fox regarding photography.
Processed by Huntington staff, circa mid-20th century. In 2020, Gina C Giang created a finding aid derived from a legacy summary
report.
