Historical Statement
The government of the City and County of San Francisco was consolidated in an act by the Legislature on April 19, 1856. The
first election under the consolidated entity was held on Nov. 4, 1856. The Department of Elections facilitates all elections
on behalf of San Francisco voters. Since the passage of a Charter amendment effective Jan. 1, 2002, the Elections Commission
assumed policy-making authority and oversight of all public federal, state, district and municipal elections in San Francisco.
Scope and Contents
Charter amendments and propositions before voters of the City and County of San Francisco. Collection begins with Nov. 5,
1907 and ends with Dec. 12, 2002. The earliest (1907) pamphlet is titled
Proposed Amendments to the Charter of the City and County of San Francisco. Titles vary, with the March 7, 2000 document titled
City and County of San Francisco Voter Information Pamphlet and Sample Ballot. Most were published by the Registrar of Voters, with later issues published by the Department of Elections. Some issues were
published by order of the Board of Supervisors and others by the Board of Election Commissioners.
