Acquisition Information

SAFR-00621
The collection was donated by William Kooiman in 1992. It is unknown how he acquired the photographs. There is an unused envelope from the company and a photocopy of a business card in the collection file. It is possible that he received the photographs from the company.

Historical or Biographical Note

Compañia Sud Americana de Vapores was founded in 1872.
All of the vessels in this collection were built in Scotland shipyards by John Reid & Company (ACONCAGUA, AYSEN, HUASCO, MAIPO, and PALENA) and Laird Brothers (IMPERIAL and CACHAPOAL).

Collection Scope and Content

The Compañia Sud Americana de Vapores photographs, 1881-1920, (SAFR 24260, P92-109) are comprised of photographs of coastal passenger steamships owned by Compañia Sud Americana de Vapores, also known as the Chilean Line, of Valparaiso, Chile. The collection has been processed to the Collection level and is open for use.
Contains photographs of seven Compañia Sud Americana de Vapores steamships and their interiors, 1881-1920. There are 25 unique photographic images (black-and-white photographic prints, 4 x 5.5 in.). The photographs are modern reproductions of older photographs. Some of the original photographs were signed by "Allan."

  • Items 01-02. ACONCAGUA (built 1889; passenger vessel). Starboard broadside view and women's salon.
  • Items 03-08. AYSEN (built 1906; passenger vessel). Starboard broadside view, dining room, smoking room, vestibule, passenger cabin, and covered deck area.
  • Items 09-11. CACHAPOAL (built 1881; passenger vessel). Starboard bow view, smoking room, and dining room.
  • Items 12-15. HUASCO (built 1906; passenger vessel). Port bow view, women's salon, dining room, and covered deck area.
  • Items 16-18. IMPERIAL (built 1889; passenger vessel). Port broadside view, dining room, and covered deck area.
  • Items 19-21. MAIPO (built 1882; passenger vessel). Port bow view, women's salon, and covered deck area.
  • Items 22-25. PALENA (built 1896; passenger vessel). Starboard broadside view, smoking room, dining room, and covered deck area.
