The bulk of this collection was purchased from collector Charles N. Kessler in 1924.
Biography/Administrative History
This collection was cataloged as a 1943 project of the Works Progess Administration. A print inventory was produced and has
been scanned and attached to this collection guide.
Scope and Content of Collection
This collection consists of materials related to the settlement and history of the state of Montana, and includes correspondence,
mining claim records, legal documents, drawings, ledgers, registers and other items. Correspondents represented include William
Andrews Clark, Sr., Thomas Francis Meagher, Wilbur F. Sanders and Charles N. Kessler. Subjects treated by the collection
include the Blackfoot tribe, Kessler Beer, Fisk expeditions, the Battle of Little Bighorn, Northern Pacific Railroad Co.,
the Montana Constitutional Convention, mining, Joseph & Alexander Culbertson and the Cook-Folsom exploration of the Upper
Yellowstone Valley.
