Biography
Paul E. Serchia, Los Angeles journalist and AIDS activist, was born on February 5, 1957. He began his journalism and political
cartooning career while a student at Pepperdine University, where he received his journalism degree in 1980. He worked at
the
Thousand Oaks News Chronicle in the early part of his career. After leaving the
News Chronicle, Serchia went on to work as the publications manager at AIDS Project Los Angeles (APLA), where he wrote and edited several
publications during the 1980s and 1990s. He was a longtime editor of
Positive Living, a monthly publication from APLA, to which he also contributed a regular column, "Thinking Positive." Serchia was also very
active on the Los Angeles Committee for the 1987 National March on Washington for Lesbian and Gay Rights, as well as the Positive
Pedelers group, which raised awareness and funds for AIDS LifeCycle. Serchia was diagnosed with HIV in 1999 and later diagnosed
with cancer in 2009. He died on March 1, 2010 in Los Angeles.
