Biographical / Historical
The materials in the collection were collected by a resident of Twentynine Palms, California along with 56 books on socialist
and labor topics. The collection was discovered by Cal Poly Pomona alumna Hilary Palmer when she purchased the collector's
house after his death.
The collector was born in Ashtabula, Ohio. He apprenticed under his father, who was a professional house painter and may have
been a member of a union. After graduating from high school, the collector moved from Ohio to Redlands, California and attended
San Bernardino City College in the 1930s.
The collector took a seasonal job with the Post Office, which brought him to Twentynine Palms. He worked summers as a house
painter and he amassed materials from the Los Angeles headquarters of the Industrial Workers of the World labor union.
Scope and Contents
The collection contains materials related to socialism and labor movements in the early to mid-20th century in the United
States. Archival materials include booklets, cards, clippings, flyers, pamphlets, photographs, and a scrapbook. As a whole,
the collection includes 56 books and periodicals which have been separated and cataloged as part of the Rare Book Collection.
