Biography/Administrative History

The Monterey Power Company was incorporated in 1894 with the following officers: Philip Oyer, president; O.S. Trimmer, vice president; J.S. Metter, treasurer; David Rodrick, manager; Robert H. Willey, secretary; and Juan Malarin, acting teller. The company appears to have been established to build an electrical power plant, using rivers and creeks in the Big Sur area, to deliver approximately 350 horse power to the Monterey & Pacific Grove Street Railway and Electric Power Company, which had the same board of directors, except for Mr. Willey. Juan Malarin had built the narrow-gauge horse car railway between the two peninsula cities in 1890-1893. The company also provided electricity for street lighting in the two cities.

Scope and Content of Collection

The volume contains the handwritten by-laws of the Monterey Power Company (pp. 1-12) followed by the minutes of the organizational meeting of June 2, 1894 and the subsequent minutes of the board meetings through November 3, 1900 (pp. 25-177). There is also a second set of minutes dated June 1, 1895 June 1, 1898 (pp. 350-371) and an out-of-chronological-order entry for the June 1, 1900 annual meeting (p. 348).
