Series I. International Brotherhood of Teamsters (IBT) 1965-2004, undated

Scope and Contents

The series comprises constitutions, bylaws, and other governing documents of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters (IBT), in addition to brochures and leaflets published by departments within the union concerning various policies and education initiatives, and promotional ephemera. Leaflets, letters, newsletters, press releases, reports, agendas, and artifacts reflecting the activities of various organizations and caucuses within the IBT are included, as are reports, proceedings, delegate election guides, news articles, artifacts, black-and-white and color photographs and negatives, and position papers from the 23rd through 26th IBT Conventions, as well as one conference held in 1987.
There are Independent Administration and Election Officer reports, rules, and appeals concerning the 1998 rerun election of the 1996 IBT General Election as well as leaflets, letters, news articles, reports, video recordings, notes, black-and-white and color photographs and negatives, and artifacts from the 1991, 1996, 1998, and 2000 IBT General Elections. Local union election guidelines are also present.
General Executive Board meeting agendas, minutes, and memoranda concerning Ron Carey and charges against local unions and the IBT's affiliation with the International Trade Union Secretariats (ITS) are present, as is a Transcript of Proceedings from the U.S. Area Conferences Revocation Hearing before the General Executive Board. Reports, a trial rebuttal, proposal leaflets, and press releases concerning the revocation are present, in addition to news articles and reports concerning Ron Carey's expulsion from the IBT Presidency and resolutions and Election Officer decisions concerning Ron Carey's legal defense against the Independent Review Board (IRB). Pamphlets, press releases, bumper stickers, and artifacts concerning The New Teamsters campaign and administration are also included.

Mailings from Ken Paff, National Organizer of TDU, on behalf of the TDU International Steering Committee (ISC) which include agendas, convention documents, memoranda, reports, letters, leaflets, meeting minutes, news articles and bulletins regarding the election of delegates to the Ron Carey Slate for the 1991 International Brotherhood of Teamsters (IBT) election, the TDU Rank-and-File Convention, the Western Conference of Teamsters Pension Trust, the Working Teamsters Election Campaign, the 1992 Independent Review Board consent order, and U.S. Area Conferences are present, in addition to internal communications and memoranda to TDU staff and concerning policy statements and the Reform Officers Project as well as subject files for various TDU local chapters that include speech typescripts, convention reports, meeting agendas, flyers, leaflets, news articles, article drafts, and color photographs. Scope and Contents

The series contains article drafts and published articles by Bob Mattingly, under the pseudonym Charles Walker, concerning labor-related topics for various publications including "Labor News Briefs", "Teamsters Notebook," and unidentified publications. Article drafts by and correspondence with Barry Sheppard, Marilyn Ullman, Ken Paff, Don Tonkell, and others are also in the series.
Files documenting Mattingly's research on various demonstrations such as a Seattle demonstration against the World Trade Organization, an International Longshore and Warehouse Union (ILWU) protest of a Pacific Maritime Association (PMA) lockout, and an anti-war and anti-racism demonstration are included, as are research files regarding political topics such as Trotskyism, the Fourth International, Pabloism, Fidel Castro, the Solidarity Party, the Socialist Workers Party, and the Freedom Socialist Party. There are also research files chronicling the activities of various labor unions in addition to the International Brotherhood of Teamsters (IBT), such as the American Federation of Labor, Congress of Industrial Relations (AFL-CIO), United Farm Workers (UFW), United Auto Workers (UAW), United Mine Workers of America (UMWA), and others. The research files contain news articles, article drafts, leaflets, color photographs and negatives, and correspondence.
Agendas, constitutions, meeting minutes, leaflets, color photographs and negatives are present that chronicle Mattingly's involvement with political organizations such as the East Bay Chapter of Labor Party Advocates and the Labor Party USA. Bay Area Young Socialist Alliance letters to and from Bob Mattingly, a West Coast Vacation School and Camp schedule, a Northern California Students Peace Rally leaflet and statement, and bulletins from the Young Socialist Alliance are also included, which reflect Mattingly's political interests from early in his life. Educational guides published by the Center for Labor Research and Education, Institute of Industrial Relations, University of California are present, as are Mattingly's student documents such as grade reports, a final exam from the City College of San Francisco, class schedules, and course materials concerning arbitration and grievance procedures.
