Biography

George T. Rahilly was born on April 13, 1916 and grew up in Queens, New York. He was a medical student at Columbia University in 1940 and became a doctor before 1951, when he married Virginia and they moved to Fort Lauderdale, Florida. On May 18, 1955, George became a father to a son, Richard Hamilton Railly. George became chief of the medical staff at Broward General Hospital and served between 1960-1961 and 1971-1978.
In an effort to entertain his son, Richard, George Rahilly began creating models of railroad trolleys and work cars. The models became increasingly more detailed and they were put on display in Connecticut and Florida Museums. He donated several to the Railway & Locomotive Historical Society. Fifty of these models form the core of the George T. Rahilly Trolley and Bus Study Center at the New York Transit Museum. Rahilly lived for a time in Stowe, Vermont. He died on May 1, 2002 in Cumberland, Maine.
