Biography/History

The origin of the collection is unknown. The materials in this collection come from various sources related to architecture and engineering. H.C. Mathers (1899-1977), whose name is inscribed on the informational book on the San Francisco

earthquake

structural damage, was president of the Associated Brick Manufacturers of Southern California. One of the albums with photographs of the Santa Barbara and Helena

earthquakes

belonged to Clarence Derrick (1893-1972), a well-known consulting structural engineer, who is recognized for helping to pioneer shock-resistant design. A set of photographs of the Santa Barbara

earthquake

in the collection was originally sent to Professor C. Martin Duke (1917-1988), a Professor of Engineering at UCLA, whose work focused on

engineering and the structural effects of

This collection consists primarily of black and white photographs of
