Abstract: Harumi Befu joined Stanford's faculty in 1965 and played a pioneering role in establishing Japanese studies at the university.
The collection is composed of Befu's family's Japanese American WWII incarceration camp material and prewar Japanese postcards.

Harumi Befu lived in Japan during WWII. Subsequently, he immigrated to the United States and earned a bachelor's degree in
anthropology from UCLA in 1954, followed by a master's degree in Far Eastern studies from the University of Michigan in 1956,
and a doctorate in anthropology from the University of Wisconsin in 1962. Joining Stanford's faculty in 1965, Befu played
a pioneering role in establishing Japanese studies at the university.
Scope and Content of Collection
The collection comprises materials pertaining to the incarceration of Befu's family during World War II, along with pre-war
Japanese postcards.
