Biographical / Historical

Millard Kaufman (1917-2009) was an American screenwriter for film, television, and radio. He began working as a screenwriter in the late 1940s and was nominated for Academy Awards for the screenplays for "Take the High Ground!" in 1953 and "Bad Day at Black Rock" in 1955.

Scope and Contents

This collection contains the papers of American screenwriter Millard Kaufman (1917-2009) and chiefly consists of film scripts dating from the late 1940s to mid 1960s. Most of the materials reflect film projects, though there are early few radio and television scripts in Box 1. In addition, while most projects are represented by screenplays, there are some outlines and treatments. There are also index-card-sized notes for the films "Beau Geste," "Raintree County," and "Reprieve" in Box 4.

Box 1 contains scripts and outlines for various projects including undated shorts, a television show "Dusty of the Circus" (1948), three radio scripts (1951), and the films "The China Run" (1951), "Handful of Magic" (1951), "The Making of a Marine" (1952), "Wind from the East" (1952), "Take the High Ground" (1952), "Rope's End" (1952-1953), "Letter from the President" (1952), "High Iron" or "Main Iron" (1953), "Bad Day at Black Rock" (1953), "Out of Darkness" (1954), and "Mail Order Bride" (1954).
