Background
The American newspaperman, author and public relations executive, John Thomas (Tom) Mahoney was born in Dallas, Texas on December
3, 1905. His initial
college career, at Southern Methodist University, was cut short when he was expelled from the school following the publication
of The Dinkey, an April Fools' Day campus newspaper, in 1924. Mahoney resumed his studies at the School of Journalism, University of Missouri,
where he lettered in track and was sports editor of The Savitar, the university's yearbook.
