Abstract: The Paul G. Chace Ephemera Collection is an assortment of memorabilia collected by anthroplogist and arheologist, Paul G. Chace. This collection is a part of a larger donation from Chace to CHSSC that, as a whole, were split into five main categories: Books, Documents, Archeological Reports, Grey Literature, and Ephemera. All portions of the donation are available to qualified researchers by appointment at the Chinese Historical Society of Southern California. These specific objects and artifacts within the entirety of the donation were processed seperately as their own collection, entitled the Paul G. Chace Ephemera Collection, for organizational purposes. The Paul G. Chace Ephemera Collection is arranged at the Series-Level and Subseries-Level. Materials include: postcards, brochures, pamphlets, ceramics, figurines, prints, framed art, audio visual material, coins, Chace's dissertation and handwritten notes, and correspondence circa 1662-2016. A large portion of this collection consists of VHS tapes, and newspapers pertaining to the Bok Kai Festivals from 1925-1999, as well as 2006. There are also archeological artifacts from an excavation that took place in Riverside, California. These artifacts include: a geological object, broken glass with Chinese chararcters on them, broken cermaics, bones, and film negatives. The collection is significant to the CHSSC becuase of the historical, archeological, and cultural insight it provides about Californian Chinese Americans. Additonally, the collection's broad scope of time period, content, types of materials, and geography offers CHSSC, researchers, and the public a wider range of resources and materials on Chinese American history.

Processing Information

Paul Chace donated a large collection of books, archeological reports, grey literature, objects, and artifacts to the Chinese Historical Society of Sourthern California. From the overall donation, four boxes of objects and artifacts were pulled to create the Pual G. Chace Ephemera Collection. For the purposes of organization and documentation, the ephemera was processed seperately as its own collection, though the entirety of Chace's donation can be found at the CHSSC.
The ephemera collection was processed by archivist interns Taylor Burnett and Daisy Cabot, and archivist Amanda Galvez, as a part of the CHSSC's ongoing mission to preserve resources on Chinese Americans, and to make them accessible to the public. The boxes were numbered by CHSSC, and to maintian the integrity of the collection, all of the boxes maintain their original content. Box 5, which contains a contact sheet and enlargements of photographs, was originally located in Box 2. Burnett and Cabot made Box 5 its own seperate box for the purpose of finding mateirals. In Box 1, there is a piece of paper entitled "Old Chinese Coins" with coins attatched and labeled by date. The dates include 1662, 1736, 1821, and 1970. though the 1970 coin was missing upon donation. Since the date is listed on the artifact, the year 1970 is included in the finding aid under Series III: Objects, Subseries 3D: Coins- despite the coin's absence from the collection. Series III: Objects also includes Subseries 3E: Recipe Book, the date of which is listed as 2004/2006. The book states that the first edition was published in 2004 and the second edition in 2006, but does not specify which edition this book in the collection is. For this reason, the date for this book has been listed as 2004/2006.
