Lipton, Lawrence, 1898-1975
Identifier/Call Number: 0159
Physical Description:
138.65 Linear Feet

Date (inclusive): 1883-2009
Date (bulk): 1950-1975
Abstract: The Lawrence Lipton papers, 1883-2009 (bulk 1950-1975), consist of correspondence, interviews, manuscripts, typescripts, audio
recordings, clippings, periodicals, photographs, motion pictures, and ephemera, created and collected by Beat Generation chronicler,
novelist, and poet, Lawrence Lipton. The collection documents Lipton's prolific work as a novelist, poet, and columnist through
typescripts and manuscripts of his works; correspondence between Lipton and members of the Beats, including Allen Ginsberg;
and interviews that Lipton conducted with a variety of notable writers and musicians during the 1960s. Lipton was born in
Lodz, Poland, on October 10, 1898. In 1903, Lipton and his family immigrated to the United States -- eventually settling in
Chicago. Lipton worked at various times as a graphic artist, a journalist, the publicity director of a large movie theater,
a writer and poet, and a jazz composer. In the 1920s, Lipton joined an influential circle of writers in Chicago, including
Ben Hecht, Carl Sandburg, Edgar Lee Masters, Sherwood Anderson, and Harriet Monroe. In the late 1930s, Lipton married his
third wife Georgiana Randolph Craig, a well-known author of mystery novels and short stories who wrote under the pseudonym,
Craig Rice. In addition to his earlier mystery fiction and articles for such magazines as Atlantic Monthly, Chicago Review,
and Quarterly Review of Literature, Lipton wrote two literary novels, "Brother, The Laugh is Bitter" (1942) and "In Secret
Battle" (1944), and a book of poetry, "Rainbow at Midnight" (1955), which was a Book Club for Poetry selection. In 1959, Lipton
published "The Holy Barbarians," the book that linked him to the Beat Generation literary movement. When Lipton wrote "The
Holy Barbarians," he had settled in Venice, California, where his home became an informal center for the arts, with Lipton
functioning as both teacher and catalyst. In Venice, Lipton was associated with the movement to restore poetry as a vocal
art long before the Beats became famous, and he began experimenting with poetry and jazz in 1956. During the last years of
his life, Lipton wrote a long-running column of political commentary in the "Los Angeles Free Press" called "Radio Free America."
Lipton died in Los Angeles on July 9, 1975.
Language of Material:
English.
Biographical note
Lawrence Lipton was born in Lodz, Poland, on October 10, 1898, and brought to America in 1903 by his father, Abraham Lipton.
The family moved to Chicago where Abraham Lipton had close friends and relatives. When Lipton was fourteen, his father died.
Lipton worked at various times as a graphic artist, a journalist, the publicity director of a large movie theater, a writer
and poet, and a jazz composer. In the 1920s, Lipton joined an influential circle of writers in Chicago, including Ben Hecht,
Carl Sandburg, Edgar Lee Masters, Sherwood Anderson, and Harriet Monroe. Lipton also married his first wife, Dorothy Omansky,
during the 1920s. After Dorothy died, Lipton married Betty Weinberg, with whom he had a son, James Lipton. In the late 1930s,
Lipton divorced Betty and married Georgiana Randolph Craig, a well-known author of mystery novels and short stories who wrote
under the pseudonym, Craig Rice. After divorcing Georgiana, Lipton married Nettie Esther Brooks in 1948.
In addition to Lipton's earlier mystery fiction and articles for such magazines as Atlantic Monthly, Chicago Review, and Quarterly
Review of Literature, he wrote two literary novels, Brother, The Laugh is Bitter (1942) and In Secret Battle (1944), and a
book of poetry, Rainbow at Midnight (1955), which was a Book Club for Poetry selection.
The Holy Barbarians, the book that linked Lipton to the Beat writers, was published in 1959, when he was sixty-one years old.
The cast of characters in the book included such "name" personalities as the writers Allen Ginsberg, Kenneth Rexroth, Kenneth
Patchen, Stuart Z. Perkoff, Gregory Corso, Lawrence Ferlinghetti, and Dylan Thomas. When Lipton wrote The Holy Barbarians
he had settled in Venice, California, where Lipton's home became an informal center for the arts -- with Lipton functioning
as both teacher and catalyst. In Venice, Lipton was associated with the movement to restore poetry as a vocal art long before
the Beats became famous, and he began experimenting with poetry and jazz in 1956. In 1957, he produced and directed a series
of poetry-and-jazz concerts that became the first West Coast Poetry and Jazz Festival, dedicated to Dylan Thomas and playing
to capacity audiences during its two-week run. In 1958, Lipton produced Jazz Canto, released by World Pacific Records.
Published in dozens of literary magazines and journals, Lipton's poetry and prose linked central themes relating to the social
responsibility of the artist to participate in the formation of a society that was more than a collective. As a visionary,
Lipton wanted the new society to be rational, functional, and responsible to the deepest needs of the human soul. During
the last years of his life, Lipton wrote a long-running column of political commentary in the Los Angeles Free Press called
"Radio Free America." Lipton died in Los Angeles on July 9, 1975.
[Biography adapted from Nettie Lipton's article in the Dictionary of Literary Biography, Volume 16: The Beats: Literary Bohemians
in Postwar America. Edited by Ann Charters, University of Connecticut. Gale Research, 1983. pp. 352-356]
Scope and Contents
The Lawrence Lipton papers, 1883-2009 (bulk 1950-1975), consist of correspondence, interviews, manuscripts, typescripts, periodicals,
audio recordings, motion pictures, clippings, photographs, and ephemera, created and collected by novelist, poet, and Beat
Generation chronicler Lawrence Lipton. The collection documents Lipton's prolific work as a novelist, poet, and columnist
through a variety of materials. Typescripts and manuscripts of his works--including Erotic Revolution, Rainbow at Midnight--and
Lipton's columns for Radio Free America, Interface, and the Los Angeles Free Press showcase Lipton's writing styles and core
themes. Correspondence between Lipton and members of the Beats, including Allen Ginsberg, as well as Lipton's third wife,
novelist Craig Rice, reveals Lipton's central position among the Beat movement. And interviews--included as both recorded
audio and, sometimes, as textual transcripts--that Lipton conducted with a variety of notable writers and musicians during
the 1960s provide examples of literary and political dialogue of that era. Also included are items that Lipton collected as
research material, newspapers and magazines (many of which feature Lipton's published poetry), photographs, and motion pictures.
Many of Lipton's articles and poems written in the era of the Beat Movement deal with subjects pertinent to "beatnik" ideology
such as anti-materialism, sexual liberation, exploration of eastern philosophy, criticism of western Christendom, experimentation
with psychedelic drugs, and denouncement of homophobia. Much of Lipton's poetry in this collection relates to his poetry and
jazz project, as Lipton often combined these two art forms as a skilled jazz music composer.

Works collected by Lawrence Lipton
1883-1988
Language of Material: English.
Scope and Contents
This series includes Lipton's collected periodicals, books, articles, poems, manuscripts, and typescripts by many of the literary
figures whose work interested Lipton, whose work he critiqued, or whose work he disseminated. See also "Subject files" for
material that Lipton organized topically with his research files. Some of the collected journals and magazines in this series
feature articles and poems authored by Lipton. When a periodical contains Lipton's work, the relevant issue is usually specified
in that title's catalog record.
Organization
This series is organized into the following subseries: 1. Articles and Columns; 2. Books, Plays, and Pamphlets; 3. Journals
and Periodicals; 4. Manuscripts and Typescripts; 5. Newspaper and Magazine Clippings; 6. Notebooks, Scrapbooks, Visual Arts,
and Ephemera; 7. Poetry. All subseries are arranged alphabetically by title, except for 5. Newspaper and Magazine Clippings,
which is arranged chronologically.
Separated Materials
All titles cataloged under this series are held with Lipton's papers.
Some of Lipton's collected books and periodicals were cataloged as part of the USC Libraries' circulating holdings (Lipton
is listed as a "Contributor" in each of these catalog records in the USC Libraries catalog search).
Other books and periodicals collected by Lipton were deaccessioned if (i) they did not contain Lipton's notes or works that

Newspaper and Magazine Clippings
1947-2009
Scope and Contents
This series contains Lipton's clippings from periodicals and magazines from various publications of the mid-twentieth century
such as the Los Angeles Times, New York Times, TIMES Magazine, UCLA Daily Bruin, and the L.A. Weekly News. Subject matter
for these periodicals and magazines reflect much of the political issues of the time, such as student protests, civil rights,
sexuality, experimentation with psychedelic drugs, critiques of higher educational systems, and music in pop culture.
Processing Information
Most of this subseries consists of clippings cut from periodicals -- some with Lipton's notes and/or highlights. There are
a few complete issues of newspapers that were included in this series if they were previously filed with Lipton's cut clippings.
For longer runs of complete issues that Lipton collected, see the subseries titled "Magazines and Periodicals." Lipton also
kept a small number of clippings with his research materials (documented in the series titled "Subject files").
Arrangement
The subseries is arranged in chronological order. Undated items are arranged in alphabetical order.

Audiovisual material

Numbered audio tapes
General
This series comprises three separate numbered sets of audio tapes. The first two sets, which are described in the first two
records of this subseries and include prefixes ("SC:T" or "T") before each tape number, are much smaller than the third, larger
set. All three numbered sets are mostly chronological, so that the lower tape numbers reflect earlier dates -- though there
are exceptions and outliers to this rule. Bulk date ranges are included for some of the boxes to reflect chronological patterns.
An incomplete index that documents the contents of some of the tapes is available on request. This index only describes parts
of the large numbered set (the tape numbers without "SC" or "T" prefixes). Specifically, this index describes the contents
of tape nos. 102-170; 185-190; 200; 321-322; 401-438; and 452-599.
Ranges of tape numbers reflected in each record's title are not always comprehensive. Within some of the larger ranges, there
are small gaps or "staggers" in tape numbers that are not always reflected in record titles.
Scope and Contents
The majority of these tapes consist of Lipton's recordings of public radio broadcasts. However, original interviews conducted
by Lipton with various authors and artists are also recorded on these tapes. These recordings also document informal conversations
and poetry readings.
Scope and Contents
Audio tape described in this series is 1/4" (6.35 mm) in width.
Box 100
Tape nos. SC:T2-SC:T79, SC:T123
1960-1967, undated
General
These tapes are numbered under a separate system (with an "SC:T" prefix before each tape number). Some of the tapes documented
in this subseries' larger, separate numbering scheme (the set without prefixes before tape numbers) are also in boxes labeled
with the "SC" prefix, but those labels are often crossed out and are most likely out-dated. An index for the "SC:T" tapes
was not included with the collection, but some of the tapes' boxes are labeled with the recordings' content (none of these
labels correspond with Lipton's tape index for the larger numbered set).
Scope and Contents
1/4" audio tape recordings (22 reels). The majority of these recordings are of public radio broadcasts on various topics.
Includes a small number of interviews (e.g., "First interview. Former sheriff, Sep. 2, 1960") that may have been conducted
by Lawrence Lipton or by public radio hosts -- the labels are minimal. Also includes tape labeled "Easter Love-In, March,
1967."
Box 101, Box 102
Tape nos. T11-T450
1946, 1956-1971, undated
Scope and Contents
1/4" audio tapes (74 reels in 2 boxes). Includes recordings of speeches by Gamal Abdel Nasser; tapes labeled "Lawrence Lipton,
Jan. 23, 1962"; recorded interviews; radio broadcasts; 9 tapes labeled "USC"; recordings of "Early Birds Reunions" (October
1966 and February 1969); and 1 tape labeled "Milton Ross."
General
These tapes are numbered under a separate system (with a "T" prefix before each tape number). An index for these tapes was
not included with the collection, but some of the tapes' boxes are labeled with the recordings' content (none of these labels
correspond with Lipton's tape index for the larger numbered set). Various numerical gaps are staggered throughout the T11-T450
range. Box 101 contains T11-T58 and Box 102 contains T173-T450.

Backstage Library Works employees documented the boxes listed under this series during a 2019-2020 collections move. The boxes
listed under this series had not been described in the finding aid prior to this move, but have since been added to this series
to maintain physical control. Backstage also found an unboxed framed portrait of Lipton, which is also listed here.
