Abstract: Photographs and the resulting published work documenting icons, iconic places, and events of the United States lesbian and gay movement, 1982-1984. The collection primarily consists of Stephen Stewart's published and unpublished black and white photographs from his work, Positive Image: A Portrait of Gay America, along with other Stewart photographs.

Biographical note

Stephen Joe Stewart was born November 23, 1953 in southern California. He graduated from California State University, Los Angeles with a Bachelor of Arts. During the 1970s and 1980s he was employed as a advertising artist and freelance photographer in Hollywood. His work appeared in the Advocate, prior to his three year journey to document lesbian and gay history. Subsequent to publishing Positive Image he wrote Gay Hollywood, The Voyeur Video Guide, and other titles using the name, Steve Stewart. He has also published under the pseudonym, Bruce Wayne.

Scope and Contents

The collection primarily consists of Stephen Stewart's published and unpublished black and white photographs from his work, Positive Image: A Portrait of Gay America, along with a few other Stewart photographs. Stewart sought to document the people, places, events, and symbols of the United States gay liberation movement. From 1982 to 1984, he traveled the United States photographing gay men, lesbians, and iconic places and events. The photographs of the West Hollywood incorporation include 6 photographs documenting voter registration and election night.

Positive Image: A Portrait of Gay America Series 1983-1985

Scope and Contents

The series includes a copy of Stewart's book once owned by Chuck Rowland, autographed by Stewart and his editor, Thomas J. Watson. The book also contains the autographs of some of the subjects of his work, including Glen Scott, Jim Kepner, Ivy Bottini, Morris Kight, Harry Hay, Dottie Wine, and David Kopay. An introduction to the planned work from 1983 and a collection inventory of the images complete the series.

Scope and contents

The series consists of Stewart's black and white photographs of gays and lesbians from across the United States, who have made a positive contribution to their communities. The bulk of the images are published and unpublished portraits from Stewart's book, Positive Image: A Portrait of Gay America, along with additional Stewart portraits.
