The Graduate Council records contain the proposal for creating a Graduate Council in the University of San Diego School
of Graduate and Continuing Education as well as meeting materials and minutes for the Graduate Council dating 1991-1996.

Historical Note
The School of Graduate and Continuing Education Graduate Council held its first meeting in the spring of 1991. Proposals for
the creating a Graduate Council pointed to the 1982 and 1987 WASC (Western Association of Schools and Colleges) recommendations
that a Graduate Council be created in order to ensure adequate support for the graduate programs at the University of San
Diego. In December 1990, a Graduate Council of six members was established. Membership included one faculty member from each
of the Graduate Schools (Arts and Sciences, Business, Education, and Nursing), the Dean of the 'lead' school for the year,
and the Graduate Dean. The purpose of the Graduate Council was to provide an avenue for communication between faculty and
administration regarding issues facing the graduate colleges. The Council discussed such issues as graduate courses, policies,
programs, student financial aid, and library support.
Staffing changes in 1997 resulted in the elimination of the School of Graduate and Continuing Education with a Graduate Dean
overseeing all of the graduate programs. The effectiveness of the Graduate Council was questioned, and the 2000 WASC report
proposed further restructuring of the Council.
Scope and Content Note
These records contain the agendas, correspondence, planning materials, and minutes for the University of San Diego Graduate
Council meetings. Also included is correspondence regarding the implementation of a Graduate Council in 1990. These records
reflect the desire to create a Graduate Council to comply with WASC recommendations as well as some reaction to the Graduate
Council implementation. Meeting materials document the role of the Graduate Council between 1991 and 1996.
