Processing Information

Negatives were separated out of original folders to promote preservation. Photographic prints were placed in protective sleeves.

Scope and Contents

The series includes photographs of musicians, social gatherings, and festivals. Among the subjects documented are Angola prison, blues artists, Cajun culture, the Isleño community at Delacroix, and the Newport Folk Festival.

Scope and Contents

This series includes field recordings, recordings made for Folk-Lyric Records, radio broadcasts, lectures, and dubs of commercial recordings created for Harry Oster's folklore courses. Field recordings include Oster's extensive recording work at the Louisiana State Penitentiary at Angola. Among the artists featured on Oster's Angola recordings are Robert Pete Williams, Andrew "Hogman" Maxey, Roosevelt Charles, and Guitar Welch. The series also includes extensive recordings of old-time music in Iowa.
