Title:
[Mr. Hamilton, in military uniform]
Abstract:
Three-quarter length, standing portrait of a man in dress military uniform. A sword hangs to his side, and a hat is on the
table next to him. Notes indicate that he is General Charles S. Hamilton (1822-1891) or possibly General Schuyler Hamilton
(1822-1903).
Date:
[ca. 1862-1865]
Subject:

Soldiers
Note:
Accompanying note (handwritten, modern, possibly by collector Zelda Mackay) notes that Charles S. Hamilton was a Northern
(Union) General in the Civil War, serving with Generals Heintzelman, Porter, and McClellan; and General Schuyler Hamilton
served on the steam transport Adelaide. This may indicate that she was not certain whether the subject is Charles S. or Schuyler
Hamilton, but she also notes that the he was a family member of one of the founders of the California firm Baker and Hamilton.
A comparison to known portraits of the generals is inconclusive.
