1 letterhead Hyde Farm, Williamsburgh, Mass. Aug. 2. 1908. My dear Mr Muir, I have just written to the Century
Co. asking permission to use your story about Stickeen in a geographical reader I am working on, and I write this letter to
arouse your interest in bringing to a greater number of boys and girls this exquisite story in case you should hear from the
Century Co. about it. I have read the story to my 04260 2 letterhead boys and girls each year since its publication
and it is always listened to with abosorbing attention. They know a great deal about you, too, and your love for trees and
mountains and glaciers. You may be interested to know that the first time I read the story, in 1897, a lady sitting in the
back of the class-room, who was a chance visitor that day, told the children that she had heard the story from your lips before
it was published. Although I have read it aloud more than a dozen times since then to grown-ups as well as children, I never
fail to feel the same thrill of 04260
