Church vestments; Mission Santa Clara; Santa Clara (Calif.); Santa Clara County (Calif.)--History;
Description:
Chasuble, green background; salmon -rose, silver galons- gold 'ribbon' trim
fiddleback. Franciscan family style; lime-color lining. Early Mission Santa Clara
1800-1825. The original shape of this vestment was perfectly round, with a hole in the
center through which the head would pass. It was large enough to cover the entire body.
The name is derived from the Latin word casula, meaning little house or tent. During the
Medieval period, the chasuble became shorter at the sides and hung down in front and
back with elongated points and was soft and voluminous in its fold. Eventually, it was
clipped, altered, and at the same time stiffened with a buckram, in what is now referred
to as the "fiddleback" style.
