ARNOLD ARBORETUM, HARVARD UNIVERSITY. BR BR Jamaica Plain, Mass., April 8, 1903. My dear Muir: You will need a passport
from the State Department at Washington in order to get into Russia at all. I cannot help you about this as it has to be applied
for personally. What you have to do is to find a notary public in San Francisco, answer such questions as he will ask you
about yourself, and then he will do the rest. There are notary publics in every city who make a business of procuring passports.
I advise you to ask Mr. Alvord about this. Very possibly he has just the man you want in his bank as he issues letters of
credit to travelers. As it will take a little time to get the passport from Washington you had best attend to it at once.
I am glad to see by the San Francisco paper which you or somebody else sent me that my wisdom in selecting you for a traveling
companion is appreciated on your side of the continent. We ought to have a fine time together and see trees enough to last
us for some years. Always faithfully yours, illegible John Muir, Esq. Martinez, Cal. 03211
