Martinez, California, May 17th 1894 My dear Cousin. I was glad to get your kind letter of 27 April to know you enjoyed
reading Picturesque California. I would have sent you a better edition on heavier paper had I known how to get it through
the mail. As to putting more of myself into these sketches I never had the heart to spoil their symmetry with mire personal
trials and adventures It looks too much like having to say Here is the Lord and here is me Still I know very well that narrative
adventures etc are most read, possibly sometime I may try my hand at something of the kind. In the meantime my first book
is now going through the press will be published in the fall In it you will find the squirrel story a good many other sketches
you may like. I always look back with lively pleasure to my visit with you all the grand Group at Birkenhed? Give my love
to all believe me ever faithfully yours John Muir 01813
