First draft of latter, in note-book 59 (40) Jan. 02 H. Gannett, U. S. Geo. Survey. My dear Gannett : Am just back
from a 10 days' trip to the G rand Can yon and find your photos, Dutton's Monograph, and atlas sheets - just what I wanted.
The Holmes drawings are wonderful. He can write also, and read rocks. I've long had my eye on that man. I went down the trail
at Bright Angel, W along rim to R ? Pt. and E as far as the old point reached by the stage road from Flagstaff, with many
grand points of view. I also enjoyed two small snow storms. The marshalling of the clouds along the Canyon depths amid the
infinite architecture was glorious. So also was the breaking up and opening of the storms, the curious mesa forests in white,
etc., and now that I have to write about it my ignorance of the subject seems worse than ever. Such a theme needs the work
of a whole life. With sincere thanks, Ever yours, J. M.02890
