(Original in possession of Mrs. Florence Merrian Bailey) Martinez, Dec. 24, 1908 Dear Mr. and Mrs. Bailey: Your good
New Year wishes make me glad, and I wish you the same with all my heart. Have you collected any telling specimens from the
New Mexican fossil forests you mention, or have you written anything about them? I wish I could have been with you to compare
these old trees with those of Arizona. I felt lonesome not seeing Dr. Merriam this year, and Helen and I mourned our grand
old Uncle James. Helen is getting well, but she will remain with Van Dykes on the desert another year at least. Several weeks
ago I sent some nuts, etc., hoping they might reach you by New Year. Faithfully yours, (Signed) JOHN MUIR
