aid in defense of our Nat. Parks Reserves Martinez, March 15, 1897 My dear Mr Lukens. No doubt you have noticed the
savage attack made in the last Congress on our parks forest reserves, though this failed a still more dangerous attack is
going to be made in the extra session, it behooves every friend of forests to cry aloud spare not in their defense. Write
get as many of your friends as possible to write to our Senators Assemblymen thanking them for the stand they made in defense
of the reserves of the state during the last fight urging them to do all they can for the reserves of other states also, to
favor a bill soon to be introduced for the protection by the military not only of the parks but reservations also. write to
your papers send copies to me for republication in eastern papers. Ever your faithfully John Muir
