Magazine , Union Square, New York City. Sir: I am in receipt, by reference from Mr. Gifford Pinchot, the Forester, Agricultural
Department, of your letter of the 7th instant, inquiring as to the status of the application of the City of San Francisco
for water from the Tuolumne River and a reservoir site in Hetch Hetchy Valley, Yosemite national Park. In response thereto,
I have to state that your previous letter on this subject, addressed to the President, was also referred to this Department;
and the matter will be presented to the Secretary for determination upon his return to the city about October 1st. In this
connection, it is proper to add that at the hearing on this matter held in San Francisco, it was agreed by those in favor
of, as well as by those opposed to, the scheme, to submit for the consideration of the Secretary briefs on the subject, and
