NEW YORK. NEW YORK, 24th December 1897 John Muir Esq. Martinez, California My dear Mr Muir 1 send you a check for
82.50, designed to be in payment for the article you were so good as to give us on Linnaeus. This is at the rate per thousand
words which we have paid the eastern writers, and I hope it will be satisfactory to you. I have had the pleasure of spreading
your mountaineering book abroad to some extent, and it has given the greatest pleasure to my friends, some of whom are now
reading it at their winter firesides with delight. I hope you will let me see you if you ever come east again. Allow me
once more to express my gratification and pleasure at the good word you said for Linnaeus, and Believe me Yours very sincerely
