Autobiographies and Reminiscences of California Pioneers, p.182-185, Vol. 1. This is a typed transcript, bound into a volume,
of the member's autobiographical reminiscence created as an institutional record for the Society of California Pioneers.
The transcription includes a reference to a photograph of the member in a set of bound volumes, but there is no longer a photograph
of this member in our collection. This unfinished reminiscence was found among Benjamin Hill's papers after his death. It
contains some anecdotes about life in mining camps, particularly trouble with gamblers. The names of different steamboats
that traveled up the Sacramento River are also given.

Autobiography & Reminiscence of Benjamin Hill, San Pedro, (Deceased), 1901. The Society of California Pioneers
Benjamin Hill left Boston on January 27, 1849 on the Brig "Almena"- Captain John Lincoln- with a company known as the "Bay
State and California Trading Co." of twenty-eight members. After a stop at Talcahuanna, Chile they arrived in San Francisco
in the early part of July 1849, and proceeded from there, to Sacramento. In Sacramento, Hill bought a house and lot from
Captain Sutter for $1500. He then sent members of his company to Webber Creek to dig for gold. Hill assisted in the preparation
of the steamship McKinnon, claimed to be the first steamboat to carry passengers on the Sacramento River. Hill was also engaged
in lumber sales
