1 Haukow 12. July. 1906 Dear Mr. Muir:- I guess it is decreed that I am never to send you the things you wanted from
South China. Shortly before I received your letter I was transfered from Canton to Haukow and will in all probability stay
here until my leave is due in about 18 months time. This place is as you know about 600 miles from Shanghai on the Yangtsz
River and in my opinion one of the prettiest places in China, at least, as far as I have seen. The climate here is much like
the state of Penn., very warm summers and cold winters: I arrived here on the 19 of January and found 10 inches of snow on
the ground, the first I had seen for over 10 years. The climate certainly is far better than that of South China, and it seems
to have put new life into me. I was such a wreck from fever when in the south. As you 03749 375
