special? 52 Martinez, July 30, 1896 My dear Johnson. I staid with the Grand Forestry Commission through the Black Hills,
Yellowstone Park the Rocky mountains generally. At Spokane I left it came here direct to get ready for the Alaska trip which
I could not shake off. Osborn is to meet me at Tacoma. I hope to get back in time to guide the Com. through the Sierra in
Sept. Oct. I enjoyed Sargent ever and ever so much--the only one of the Com. that knew loved trees as I loved them. He objected
strenously to may leaving, but I thought I could do more in Alaska than with the Com. after crossing the continent with them
seeing every tree. your knid letter was received at Spokane I esnd you herewith the cost of my wahsing thanks on thanks for
your kindness. The S.O. Jewett clipping I handed to Mrs M she said it was charming no doubt was due to your care. I do hope
your rest by the sea will be a true rest. Without you I should have perished in the hot fissures called streets in N.Y. The
evening with Tesla was a rare pleasure I've due wholly to you all the eventful trip you were my good angel. Send my cordial
regards to Mrs Johnson believe me ever always Yours truly John Muir Bancroft Library
