ARNOLD ARBORETUM, HARVARD UNIVERSITY. Jamaica Plain, Mass., July 31, 1905. My dear Muir: I am pained to hear from Miss
Eastwood that Mrs. Muir has had to suffer an operation and is in a critical condition. I hope you will all accept my most
sincere sympathy. Please write me some of the details of her sickness. I can only hope that she has not had to suffer. I
made most of my arrangements to follow your advice to the extent of returning to Pekin this summer, then going to Australia,
New Zealand, etc., for the winter, but ever since April I have had a very troublesome right shoulder in which a most obstinate
case of rheumatism has settled and I have had to give up the trip for the present. If I get better I hope to get down to the
west coast of South America in the winter and try to see something of the South American conifers. In the meantime I have
to amuse myself with Crataegus, a job that is likely to last longer than I do. With renewed sympathy, I am always, dear
Muir, Faithfully yours, illegible John Muir, Esq., Martinez, Oal
