G. W. Hume Company (Turlock, Calif.)
Description:
George Weber Hume was one of three men who first canned salmon in 1864 and launched the salmon canning industry that spanned
the Pacific Coast. Established in 1910, the Turlock facility canned fruits and vegetables. It became the main headquarters
of the company in 1938 and remained in business until 1968. In this photograph, the main complex of cannery buildings is
adjacent to the railroad tracks. The cluster of small buildings in the foreground is the employee housing compound built
in 1917 by the company.
