Martinez, California. Nov. 18, 1902. Mr. Chas. L, Biedenbach, Berkeley, Cal. Dear Mr. Biedenbach; I thank you heartily
for your kind and flattering letter of the 12th. If any thing could draw me out of my winter den, it would be an Aroor Day
celebration; But as yet I cansee no opening through the midst of my many literary engagements, and of course cannot promise
to be with you. As to the tree you propose to plant, the two Sequoias are favorites of mine. The sempervirens would, I think
be most likely to thrive at Berkeley. Thanking you for the honor you propose, wishing you a good time and regreting I cannot
be with you, I am Sincerely Yours illegible
