Autobiography & Reminiscence of Felix Sanchez, San Francisco, 1901. The Society of California Pioneers
Felix Sanchez was born on May 18, 1823 in the city of Malaga, Spain. He left Spain at an early age with Captain Chris Houxes
on board the brig "Martha". He traveled for years and in 1848 decided to join a crew sailing to San Francisco. Sailing from
Boston January 5, 1849 on board the pilot vessel "Anonima", they arrived in San Francisco on June 27, 1849. Once in S.F.
Sanchez stayed with the "Anonima" piloting vessels into the harbor. He then worked on a schooner carrying passengers up the
San Joaquin River to Stockton. In September of 1949 Sanchez decided to try his luck in the mines, working Sullivan's diggings,
an area a few miles from Sonora, for three months. He returned to S.F. for the duration of the winter. By March of 1850 Sanchez
went back to mining, this time at Bidwell's Bar, Indian Bar, and the middle Fork of the Feather River. He returned to S.F.
the following November only to soon leave for Oregon with a friend in hopes of escaping the cholera epidemic spreading in
the city. He arrived in Portland around January 1, 1851 and then walked up to Salem. Sanchez and his partner bought two boats
and carried passengers up the Willamette River to Oregon City and operated trips to Vancouver on the Columbia River. This
business lasted 4 months when Sanchez and his partners went prospecting for claims, settling near the Cowlitz River. Soon
Sanchez decided to return to California and took passage on a Brig to Santa Cruz. Sanchez spent some time in Santa Cruz before
moving back to S.S. and then to Petaluma after marrying his wife. He engaged in farming and selling his crops
