Martinez, Cal. October 13, 1905. Dear Mr. Murdoch: I thank you very much for your kind letter of sympathy in our bereavement.
My noble wife suffered but little, and up to the last day fully expected to recover. Her only care seemed to be about Helen
who had pneumonia about two years ago, and the affected lung is still a source of constant anxiety to Wanda and I me . She
recovered so rapidly she took no heed to the danger of overexertion; consequently she has had two dangerous relapses - the
last, only a few weeks ago in Arizona where she now is, but has made quick recovery and already seems almost perfectly well.
I have been here at the desolate home a few days on business, and will return to Adamana, Arizona, tomorrow. Helen will remain
there in the dry air probably a year longer, and Wanda and I with her. The last terrible lesson will, I think, make her more
careful and all of us more watchful. The place we are stopping at is on the Santa Fe railroad, about 250 miles East of the
Grand Canon. I wish we could have the pleasure of seeing you again. We all remember your visit as a source of enjoyment,
and I am Faithfully yours, John Muir.03447
