ARNOLD ARBORETUM, HARVARD UNIVERSITY. Jamaica Plain Mass.,February .19.,........1908. My dear Muir: We have here In
the herbarium very unsatisfactory material of the California Walnut which, as you Know, does not grow very far from your house;
at least we drove to it once in a comparatively short time. I am rather interested in the matter, for it seems possible that
the little bush in southern California with small nuts may be a different species from your tree. Would n't it be possible
for you to press for me some good flowering specimens this spring when the trees are in bloom and later make some good leaf
specimens? I hope you will. I do not know if you are provided with suitable driers for such work, but, if not, I can send
you some. I do not seem to get over the bad Crataegus habit yet and have been working over them pretty much all winter. Next
month I want to make a trip as far as Louisiana where what appears to be a new species of Gleditsia has been discovered, and
then down to the extreme southern part of Florida where there is still work to be done. When are you coming east and how does
your book get on? Faithfully yours, C. S. Sargent. John Muir, Esq., Martinez, Cal. 04070
