May 3, 1809 document from Jose Maria Estudillo in Monterey to the
Commissioner of the town of San Jose, discussing the capture of a fugitive Native
American named Secundino who has been charged with several thefts, and is a suspect in a
rape case. The Commissioner is ordered to transport the captive to Monterey. The letter
ends with this admonition: "With regard to the care of the Indians who are
taken prisoner in that town, I must insist that it is the responsibility of the Mission
to provide for them. However, if the Mission does not do so, no one else will and they
will be held prisoner without food until they die. God keep you many years."
