JOSEPH B. GILDER EDITOR JEANNETTB L. GLLDER ASSOCIATE EDITOR PUTNAM'S MAGAZINE NO 27 WEST 23D ST NEW YORK Dec. 29th,
1909. John Muir, Esq., Martinez, Calif. Dear Mr. Muir: I wonder if it would be possible for you to let us have a brief
paper on John Burroughs? It seems to me he has reached an age, and a decree of distinction, which would quite justify the
printing in such a magazine as this of a paper on his relations to the study of nature, the correct information he has disseminated,
the attractiveness of his literary style and the charm of his personality. And the conjunction of your name with his would,
it strikes me, be a most happy one. There is no immediate urgency about this; but I should be very glad to think that we
might expect to receive such a manuscript within the next few weeks, or even the next few months. Faithfully yours, Joseph
