First draft of letter, in note-book 59 (45) Jan.1902 Hon. G eorge Perkins, U. S. Senate, Washington, D.C. Dear Senator:
My friend Mr. T. P. Lukens of Pasadena writes me that in the reorganization of the Forestry Department a Superintendent of
our forests is to be appointed, and he wants the place. Ha knows the Cal ifornia forests well, especially those of the South,
has worked hard for their preservation, mostly at his own charge, and would, I have no doubt, be a faithful and efficient
Superintendent or Supervisor. With best wishes, I am, Sincerely yours, J. M.02840
