EDITORIAL OFFICE OF The Atlantic Monthly, BOSTON. December 30, 1897. My dear Mr. Muir, The January Atlantic has
not long been before the public, but we are hearing all sorts of pleasant things about your paper that constitutes the best
part of it. The newspaper comment on articles of this sort is too likely to be perfunctory, and the more significant things
that we hear come by word of mouth and in private letters. I send you this as my New Year greeting, and to express the hope
that the next paper will be along at as early a time as you can find it convenient. In the mean time, you may be sure that
our plan for publishing as much work as you will give us in the Atlantic and afterwards in book form waxes more pleasing as
the months go by. Very heartily yours, Walter H. Page Mr. John Muir. 02377
