Genetics, graduate student Carole Meredith pollinates tiny wild tomatoes from Peru. Hundreds of samples of tomato seeds were
harvested there last year by a University expedition searching for new genetic strains to use in improving U.S. tomato varieties.
Hoped-for improvements include tomatoes that would have more resistance to disease and insects, as well as increased nutritional
qualities, increased solids, and traits that would allow improved mechanical harvesting. This project and other work to enhance
the world's food supply will be explained by students and faculty at the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences
on the Davis campus as part of Picnic Day activities this Saturday (April 19)
