Portage, Wis. Jan. 11- 97. Dear Brother John. Your letter of the 1st gave me great satisfaction. And I cannot tell you
how deeply grateful I am to you for your brotherly kindness, in this matter. To have this business settled to David's satisfaction--and
to know that all of his dealings with Mother were just what they should be gives me great comfort; for Mother never understood
the situation--or, if she did, at the time of David's settlement with her, she must have forgotten it immediately, for, as
you yourself know, she was never satisfied about it and expressed many doubts. Of this David need never know anything further,
