Los. Angeles, Cal., Jan. 26, 1911. 325 West Adams Street. Miss Lilian Gillette Cook, Long Lea Farm, Amherst, Mass.
Dear Madam:- The specimen you sent me is, as you guessed, the Sequoia sempervirens. It is extremely unlikely that the tree
from which you oh tailed the specimen is growing naturally in Portland. These trees have been planted all over the states
of Oregon, Washington, California, and in suitable localities in Europe, Australia and New Zealand. I saw specimens of both
the sempervirens and gigantea nearly one hundred feet high at Christ Church, New Zealand. Only a few small groves are known
to be growing naturally in Oregon. If you have not already done so, you should visit both of these trees at home on the Coast
Ranges an the Sierra of California. With all good wishes, and congratulating you on the pleasure you take in the study of
these grand trees, I am, Faithfully yours, John Muir
