letterhead Jan. 12, 1910 Mr. John Muir: Thank you for your letter of Jan. 6. Adverse circumstances alone have prevented
my becoming a mountaineer before this time. I shall write to the Sierra Club at once and hope to learn later that you have
been persuaded to join in the next outing, for rumor has reported you so distinctly the soul of the party that no other name
has been associated with it. You can appreciate how impossible the usual tourist party becomes when brought face to face with
