01736 New York Thursday, Sep. 28, 1893. letterhead Dear Louie- I had hoped to be in Chicago ere this but have been
waiting for Mr Johnson who is hard pressed with work on account of the absence of Mr Gilder. Johnson thinks it is very important
that I go to Washington to see Hooke Smith the Chairmen of land committees your telegrams point the same way Mr Gilder got
back last evening Johnson I will start for Washington tomorrow remain there a day or two, then go on together to Chicago where
Mrs Johnson now is. I mean to stop only a day or two at Chicago Then go to Portage then straight home. The days spent here
have not been wholly unprofitable as at the Century rooms the Clubs I have met some interesting people. One evening as I sat
at dinner with Johnson at the club called The Players I noticed a grayhaired man looking hard at me. Presently he came across
the dinning room asked if this was John Muir
