John Bering was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on April 6, 1828. His spent a good portion of his youth traveling with
his father who was a ship captain to ports across Europe and South America. In 1844, Mr. Bering went to Buenos Aires and
stayed there until 1848 working for the U.S. Consul and later, shipping and commission merchants. Upon return to Philadelphia
from Buenos Aires he heard news of the gold discovery in California and resolved to go to California. He joined the company,
"Gordon's California Association" and sailed from New York on February 9, 1849. After a stop in Rio de Janeiro, he arrived
in San Francisco on September 12, 1849, and started for the southern mines via Stockton. In the fall of 1850 Mr. Bering located
at a ranch in Modesto and planted a peach orchard. A flood in 1851 destroyed this orchard, which was the first peach orchard
